Man stabbed during fight over phone in Plastic View

A man believed to be in his mid-20s was found with stab wounds to his neck and chest.

Two men appeared in the Pretoria magistrate’s court today in connection with a murder in Plastic View, east of Pretoria.

“We received a call alerting us of a murder at the informal settlement on Sunday,” said Garsfontein police spokesperson Duane Lightfoot.

“When they arrived at the scene, the officers were confronted by a hostile crowd and they had to retreat at first,” he said.

“Reinforcements were sent to the scene and the situation was calmed down.”

He said a man in his mid-20s was found with stab wounds in his chest and neck.

Medical services were called to the scene and paramedics declared the victim dead.

On the same day, the two men, also in their mid-20s, were arrested for the murder.

Plastic View CPF chairperson Benjamin Sithole said a fight broke out at one of the properties.

“We are told the fight that led to the stabbing was over a stolen phone,” he said.

Sithole said when community members got wind of the incident, they gave chase and apprehended a man.

They then called the Garsfontein police.

“Violent crime here is on the increase,” he said.

“Three weeks ago, a group of men shot another and fled.”

Sithole said the informal settlement was rocked by several other such incidents, which involved guns, knives and a pickaxe.
