Former attorney gets R10 000 bail for allegedly defrauding trust of R1.2m

“A warrant of arrest for his apprehension was issued and he handed himself in at the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation office in Pretoria on Thursday. The investigation team formally charged him with theft and took him to court.”

A 48-year-old man and former attorney has been granted R10 000 bail after he allegedly swindled over R1.2-million from a practice’s trust fund for personal use.

Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said Ramolongwane Patrick Mariri appeared in the Pretoria specialised commercial crimes court on October 1, facing charges of theft.

However, the case was postponed to October 22 for further investigation.

Mulamu said it was alleged that during 2017, when Mariri was practising as an attorney at RP Mariri Attorneys in Pretoria, he defrauded and withdrew over R1.2-million.

“Further investigation revealed that the money was paid into the trust fund account following the Road Accident Fund client’s payment finalisation.”

She said the Law Society had since struck Mariri off the roll in 2017 from practicing as an attorney.

“A warrant of arrest for his apprehension was issued and he handed himself in at the Hawks’ serious commercial crime investigation office in Pretoria on Thursday.

The investigation team formally charged him with theft and took him to court.”
