R500 000 Chinese boost to SA

Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Chen Xiaodong said that the donation would further strengthen relations between South Africa and China and will play a great role in assisting in the fight against Covid-19.

The embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Pretoria has assisted the Department of Social Development with much-needed food voucher and face mask donations.

Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, on Tuesday, received the donations of food vouchers valued at R500 000 and 50 000 face masks from the embassy.

Zulu said the donations were a significant contribution towards assisting Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal communities that were affected by the recent unrest and looting.

“We are pleased to receive this R500 000 donation from the People’s Republic of China through the embassy. It will go a long way in alleviating the challenges that are facing communities in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal due to the recent unrest,” Zulu said.

Chinese ambassador to South Africa, Chen Xiaodong welcomed the department delegation and said that the donation would further strengthen relations between South Africa and China and will play a great role in assisting in the fight against Covid-19.

Xiaodong said that under the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa, South Africa had achieved positive results in epidemic prevention and control, and its economic and social development had gradually returned to the right track.

He spoke highly of the social security measures taken by the Department of Social Development under the leadership of Zulu.

“China was ready to work with South Africa to overcome difficulties and continue to assist within its capacity to help South Africa achieve the goal of prevailing over the pandemic, stabilising the economy and ensuring people’s livelihood.

“South Africa has made positive headway in their response to the Covid-19 response and the economic recovery. The Department of Social Development has played a great role in this response so we are happy to support their efforts.

This follows unrest and looting in various parts of the country, including Pretoria, Mamelodi, which witnessed sporadic incidents of looting in June, with Tshwane mayor Randall Williams saying 130 people had been arrested.

The unrest led to the South African National Defence Force patrolling in Mamelodi and embarking on operations to recoup some of the stolen goods looted from Mams mall and Denlyn mall.
