Security officer shot during Menlyn mall jewellery store heist

Menlyn Park shopping centre confirmed a shooting on its premises following an armed robbery at a jewellery store on Sunday afternoon.

Spokesperson Olive Ndebele said police investigations were underway as the crime scene was active.

“The SAPS are on site and have taken control of the situation.”

Ndebele said it had been reported that a security guard was shot during the robbery, which subsequently led to him being taken to hospital by am ambulance.

“Regrettably, entrance 3 remains closed. The rest of the shopping centre has been declared safe and is open for trade.”

She apologised to customers for the inconvenience.

Roxanne Lombard, who was shopping at Menlyn mall, told Rekord that customers were kept at the mall for about 50 minutes, as various shops had quickly shut their doors

“I heard shots as I was shopping and that’s when we were detained at the mall, however, I managed to flee to saftey at the basement parking.

“We still could not leave as the mall entrance and exits were closed off.”

She said she was unsure what happened, saying however, “this was a very scary moment”.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Webster Scheepers confirmed to Rekord that there was a robbery at a store at the mall.

“One suspect shot a security officer and an undisclosed amount of jewellery was allegedly taken.”
