Adhere to prescribed to maximum speed limits, traffic police warn

“All drivers found disobey the rules of our roads and continue to conduct themselves with impunity will be severely punished."

The Gauteng traffic police (GTP) have warned motorists to adhere to the prescribed maximum speed limits when travelling on freeways.

The prescribed maximum speed limit on freeways was 120km per hour.

This after the GTP’s high speed unit arrested five drivers who were said to have been speeding excessively on major roads in the province – the N4 Pretoria to Mpumalanga and the N1 Pretoria to Johannesburg.

“It is unfortunate that when we continue with our efforts to save the lives of road users, there are drivers who are hell-bent on violating road traffic rules and regulations,” spokesperson Sello Maremane said.

“All drivers who disobey the rules of our roads and continue to conduct themselves with impunity will be severely punished,” he said.

Maremane said a 41-year-old male was caught driving a BMW M4 at 216km/h in a 120km/h zone, on the N4 freeway.

All of the “reckless and negligent” drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving, alternatively, exceeding the general speed limit.

“The GTP high speed unit will continue to conduct such operations and apprehend motorists who continuously endanger the lives of road users.

“Excessive speeding is one of the major contributing factors towards road traffic crashes,” Maremane said.

Earlier in the month, he said their high speed unit had been successful in clamping down on speedsters as a result of the use of the latest technological devices such as moving violation recorders (MVR) during their operations.

Maremane explained that the MVR recorded the average speed measured over a minimum of 500m.

The event was then recorded and downloaded for investigation and prosecution purposes.
