High-speed chase sees ‘drunk driver’ arrested in Centurion

Police say the 47-year-old driver “struggled to talk or even stand on his feet”.

A man was arrested for drunken driving on Monday, following a high-speed car chase with police in Centurion.

Sergeant Moofe Rangani from Erasmia spotted a white Mazda single cab bakkie driving recklessly on the R55, near Zwarkops racing track.

“Officer Rangani tried to stop the driver of the bakkie, but he sped off and Rangani gave chase,” said Erasmia police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto.

The suspect was cornered on the M26 near Erasmia.

“Upon inspection of the vehicle, five bottles of liquor were found in the vehicle.”

Moloto said the driver “struggled to talk or even stand on his feet”.

He was immediately arrested and detained at Erasmia SAPS for drunken driving.

The man was expected to appear in court soon.

Erasmia SAPS station commander Captain Simon Maredi applauded the officer for her bravery by putting her life in danger, which led to the arrest of the 47-year-old man.

“The officer protected other motorists from fatal injuries which the suspect could have caused,” said Maredi.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a criminal offence.

Convicted drivers can have their driver’s license suspended for six months or face up to six years in jail.

Arrive Alive has urged motorists to avoid drinking and driving as it often leads to accidents, violence, difficulties at work and home and trouble with the law.

The AA has issued the following tips to motorists:

– Alcohol slows down your reaction time and distorts your vision.

– Don’t party the night before you drive.

– Fatigue combined with a hangover makes you an unsafe driver.

– Don’t use alcohol to deal with stress, depression or loneliness.

– Don’t feel ashamed to ask for help if you think you may have a drinking problem.

– Don’t be influenced by friends – say no to “one for the road”.

If you are over the limit, ask a designated non-drinking driver to drive you home or take public or private transport.
