Maile hands over title deeds in Soshanguve and Winterveldt

"I am very happy and I do not know how to even express my feelings."

Some residents in north of Pretoria have finally received title deeds for the homes.

Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and CoGTA Lebogang Maile handed over the title deeds to beneficiaries on Friday.

Maile handed over 339 title deeds in Soshanguve and 387 in Winterveldt extention 3.

This week 214 title deeds will be handed over to beneficiaries in Soshanguve extension 4.

Maile said the title deeds were a means to assure residents that the houses of the beneficiaries were safe.

Maile said he is aware that some of the residents have been waiting for a long time to receive the deeds.

“The process of getting title deeds is problematic because as the government, we need to get lawyers who can make sure these title deeds are registered lawfully.

“To register a title deed, there are processes that need to be followed. The first one is proclamation, some of the beneficiaries cannot receive their title deeds because the townships they are staying in have not been proclaimed.”

He said the Gauteng government was also donating land to people who wanted to build houses for themselves.

“We have what we call rapid land release. We give people land that has water, electricity, sewers and roads. So when the people move in, they can build for themselves. The land is given to them for free.

“Most of these people are young employed youth who cannot qualify to get houses. We want to give the youth a chance to build for themselves. We have about 10 000 stands that will be given to the youth in different areas.

“Gauteng has about 230 000 people coming from other provinces every year to look for opportunities. We have about one million people who want houses, so we decided it is not possible to build everyone a house. We decided to help those who want to build for themselves through the rapid land release.”

One of the beneficiaries who received her title deed on Friday, Mary Mahamba, said she was extremely happy about receiving her title deed.

“I don’t know what to say but I am extremely happy.”

Another beneficiary Eseu Nkonyane said he had been waiting for his title deed since 2006.

“I am very happy and I do not know how to even express my feelings. This means the house now belongs to me.”

S’ponopo Masombuka said she had been waiting for the title deed for many years.

“I have been here in Winterveldt for a long time, and today I finally received the title deed. This means that even if I would pass away, no one can remove my children from the house. I wish this gesture isn’t done only for us but to everyone deserving.”
