Minibus taxi robbery victims called to come forward

The polices request for victims to come forward comes after two people were arrested in connection with the crimes earlier this week.

Police are calling on taxi commuters who had fallen victim to a robbery in a minibus taxi in the Pretoria North area to come forward.

“We are requesting each and every person who has fallen victim to such a crime to present themselves to Pretoria North police station and speak to Sergeant Madua,” police spokesperson Sergeant Tsakani Miyen said.

“This is regardless of jurisdiction, we just need people who have been robbed under these circumstances to come forward.”

She said they intended to organise an identity parade where they hoped the victims would be able to identify the perpetrators.

“This will assist in trying to secure a conviction as the matter goes forward,” Miyen said.

Their request for victims to come forward comes after two people were arrested in connection with the crimes earlier this week.

She further said they intended to legally keep the alleged perpetrators behind bars for around seven days so that victims could come forward and an identity parade be conducted.

Previously, Miyen warned of two minibus taxis terrorising unsuspecting passengers in their policing precinct.

In July, she warned commuters to be vigilant of a red Toyota Venture and a white Toyota Venture in April.

She explained both vehicles had four occupants who drove around looking for unsuspecting commuters which they could rob.

The occupants in the red Venture reportedly only took cash and cellphones while those in the white Venture allegedly robbed people at gunpoint, took their valuables and demanded their bank card and PIN numbers to withdraw whatever money was available.

A month ago, Miyen – once again sounding the alarm over the increasing number of car hijackings – said one of the vehicles which criminals used to commit the hijackings was a Toyota Venture.
