New R62m Mams fire station is unveiled
“The new fire station came about after our assessments showed that there was a need for an emergency services station in the area because the nearest station is more than 15km away.”
No more running around with water buckets for Mamelodi and Nellmapius residents when their shacks catch fire as a fire station has been opened nearby.
This new fire station was unveiled by Tshwane mayor Randall Williams on Thursday.
He was joined by community safety MMC Karen Meyer.
“The fire station is completed and will begin operations in the coming month,” said Tshwane mayoral spokesperson Sipho Stuurman.

The budget set aside for its construction was R62.1m and would serve residents in region 6.
“The new station will let the metro’s emergency services respond promptly and without delay to emergency calls in the surrounding areas,” said Stuurman.
“The new fire station came about after our assessments showed that there was a need for an emergency services station in the area because the nearest station is more than 15km away.”
He said this distance resulted in extensive delays in response times, especially in Nellmapius and Mamelodi.
Mamelodi is one of the largest townships in Tshwane.
It is surrounded by many informal settlements where flooding and fires often occur, “so we need to respond to these instances effectively”.
The station was built on a site measuring 19 500 m².
The building, which includes an open courtyard and parking, measures 1 745 m².
Mayor Williams said the metro “will continue to strive for excellence in the way we capacitate our emergency services, which is considered to be one of the strongest departments in the country”.
“It will always be our priority to keep our residents safe,” he said.
