Police raise awareness after very alarming rise of GBV cases

“Men and women in attendance were urged to refrain from any form of crime against women and children and further encouraged to break silence against domestic violence,” said Moganedi.

Officers from the Cullinan police station together with the Victim Friendly Room members took to the streets on Tuesday to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual offences.

“The aim is to empower not only women and children, but also men who are being abused as well and encourage them to break the silence and start talking,” said Cullinan police spokesperson, Constable Connie Moganedi.

The awareness campaign follows after the station had made several arrests of rape suspects.

“The number of arrests were very alarming over the past weeks.

“Our main aim is to sensitise residents with information about the forms of gender-based violence preventative tips against sexual offences,” said Moganedi.

The social crime prevention unit and the communication office from Cullinan police station handed out pamphlets and talked to residents at the Cullinan post office and the shopping mall.

The pamphlets had information and safety tips of where to get help.

“We felt if we went to the public and explain to them about the GBV and sexual offences it will make a difference.”

She added most of these cases occurred at night.

The public was encouraged to avoid taking lifts from strangers at night.

Parents were also advised to know where their children were at all times “even if they go play with their neighbours”.
