Two police shot in Soshanguve Extension 6 protest
"Both members were taken to a local hospital where they are receiving further medical treatment."
Police have opened a case of attempted murder and malicious property damage after two officers were shot at during violent protests in Soshanguve ext. 6 on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said the officers were attached to the Pretoria public order policing unit and were shot at while on patrol in a police Nyala in the area on Tuesday night.
“The area had been engulfed by unrest during the day due to evictions that were taking place,” said Mathe.
“Both of them were wounded. They had to be taken to a local hospital where they received medical treatment. The two front tyres of the police nyala were damaged in the shooting.”
While a case of attempted murder and malicious property damage has been opened, no arrests have been made thus far.
In a separate incident in Soweto, an off-duty police officer attached to the Orlando family violence, child protection and sexual offences investigations unit (FCS) was robbed of his service pistol by three males after being shot multiple times.
The officer sadly succumbed to his injuries on the scene. This incident happened in Freedom Park in Soweto on Tuesday evening just after 22:00. A case of murder and armed robbery have been registered and no arrests have been made as yet.
Mathe said Gauteng police have since launched the 72-hour activation plan in a bid to apprehend those responsible for the murder and attacks on the police officials.
“Police are reminding communities that they remain the eyes and ears of all law enforcement agencies and are pivotal to the reduction of crimes especially those that are serious and violent.
Communities who may have information on both incidents are encouraged to call the Crime Stop hotline number on 086 00 10111 or download the MySAPS App on any android or smartphone.
