800 arrested in latest O Kae Molao operations
Scores of vehicles were also stopped and searched across the province and fines issued in line with the road traffic act.
At least 800 people were arrested for a variety of crimes in the latest O Kae Molao operations conducted by the police and other law-enforcement agencies at the weekend.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said they would face charges including possession of unlicenced firearms, possession of and dealing in drugs.
“Among the arrested, there were also wanted suspects for gender-based violence related crimes as well as 70 people for contravening the immigration act,” she said.
In one of the operations in the Johannesburg area, led by provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, a police station was assisted in reducing popular crimes in the area.
One of these crimes was illegal mining.

Sello said illegal mining was a root cause for crimes such as assault, murders, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms.
“The Roodepoort operations resulted in the disruption of illegal mining and 11 people were arrested for possession of illegal mining equipment in Matholesville,” she said.
Meanwhile, scores of vehicles were stopped and searched across the province.
“Four unroadworthy vehicles were impounded and two stolen vehicles were recovered.” Sello said.
