Four siblings who died in Kirkney fire laid to rest

"My dearest sons, my heart is broken, my heart is troubled, I feel as though a sword has cruelly torn my flesh and pierced my soul."

The four brothers who perished in a house fire in Mount Anderson Street in Kirkney two weeks ago were laid to rest on Sunday.

Brothers Fortunate, Aubrey, Promise and Kamogelo Mashiloane and a domestic worker lost their lives in an unexplained fire in the early hours of November 10. The boys ages ranged between six and 24.

A mother and her toddler managed to escape the fire with minor injuries.

During the funeral service, a family member read a speech which was written by the devastated mother who could not gather herself to speak.

“My dearest sons, my heart is broken, my heart is troubled, I feel as though a sword has cruelly torn my flesh and pierced my soul.

“Your departure left a septic wound in my heart. I feel as if there’s nothing, be it a word or medicine, that can heal me anytime soon.

“You were my dearest kids and friends. How I wish I could reverse all that happened or wake up to realise that all that is happening now is only a dream.

“I am going to miss the respect and above all, the love that you gave me. I will always thank heaven for affording me an opportunity to be your mother.

“As the holy angels usher you to be with the Most High, may your beautiful souls rest in peace and rise in glory, we shall meet again in God’s time. I dearly love you my sons and will forever miss you, with love, Mum.”

Gauteng Cooperative Governance MEC Lebogang Maile, who was also at the funeral said the day he heard of the tragedy, he visited the family and went to the mother of the siblings in hospital.

“We did not speak in detail but of course she was devastated, she also expressed her fear that there might be someone behind this.

“We said to the media that we do not want to speculate and we would leave this to the police. We will take key interest in this matter, I will call the commissioner of the police in the province to personally take key interest on this matter and get to the bottom of this.”

Maile said the passing of the siblings is tragic because in the ordinary course of life parents should never bury their children.

“The hopes, aspirations and dreams of every family are best expressed and fulfilled in the lives and achievements of their children.

“No amount of words and money will wipe this grief and this pain. I have never lost a child but I can only imagine that it is unbearable pain.

“I made a commitment to the mother that we will build her a house but not as government because there are a lot of people waiting for houses.”

Maile said he would also like to urge business people to donate money to the mother and her surviving child as they have no income.

He also committed to helping the family of the domestic worker who also lost her life in the fire.

“In no way do we have any delusion that these small contributions are going to heal the family, all we are saying is that let us help them not to be overburdened.”
