Free hairstyle campaign for school children this Christmas

#MillionsmileSA and Hair by Nolo pledges to help a girl child polish her crown for Christmas by braiding their hair for free for the festive season.

#MillionsmileSA and Hair by Nolo has set a target of braiding 80 girls for free this Christmas.

Jessica Buys (23) from Hair by Nolo in Mamelodi said their main aim was to braid 80 girls’ hair for free for the campaign called “Help a girl child polish her crown”.

She said the last campaign they held for schoolgirls was a success and they managed to braid 58 learners’ hair, exceeding the target of 50.

“We still have about 12 or more volunteers who have been helping in the campaign from the first event and are still willing to continue with the initiative,” said Buys.

“If more people are willing to help, they are more than welcome to join us.”

She said the plan was to make the “Help a girl child polish her crown” a quarterly event. So far, they have managed to host it in December (for Christmas) and January (back to school).

Buys said this is the third free hairstyle campaign.

The #MillionSmilesSA said it’s an initiative aimed at giving million smiles to the girls and those who are behind it.

“Help a girl child polish her crown campaign is for needy children whose parents can’t afford to take their children to the hair salon.”

Buys said since it was the festive season, they will be doing braids with different colours for the spirit of Christmas.

The school campaign was to encourage the learners to go to school looking beautiful with new hairstyles and had the opportunity to get Benny and Betty hairstyles and free-hand cornrow hairstyles for free.

“Polishing their crowns before Christmas, it’s like giving the girl child an early Christmas gift,” said Buys.

She pleaded with the public to help with different colours of wools so that the children can choose their dream hairstyles.

The “Help a girl child polish her crown” campaign will be held at house 28752 on the corner of Thwala and Tumelo streets in Mamelodi
East ext 5, on December 19 from 08:00 to 16:00.

All types of donations are welcome and for bookings contact Jessica Buys on 084 717 8333.
