Apply for a protection order – cops urge domestic violence victims

“If these forms of abuse are happening to you or anyone you know, you can apply for a protection order."

As the annual 16 Days of activism for no violence against against women, children and other vulnerable groups campaign was launched, victims of domestic violence were urged to apply for protection orders by the police.

Domestic violence was defined by the law as “any form of abuse which included physical, sexual, emotional, psychological or economic harassment, damage to property, stalking, entering into a person’s property without their consent and any other abusive or controlling behaviour where such conduct caused harm or may cause harm to a person’s safety or well-being”.

“If these forms of abuse are happening to you or anyone you know, you can apply for a protection order,” the justice department said.

The domestic violence protection order was a document issued by the court which prevented the abuser from:

– committing an act of domestic violence;

– enlisting the help of another person to commit any such act;

– entering a residence shared by the complaint and the respondent;

– entering a specified part of such a shared residence;

– entering the complainant’s residence;

– entering the complainant’s place of employment;

– committing any other act as specified in the protection order.

Last week, Gauteng MEC for community safety Faith Mazibuko launched the 16 Days of activism campaign in Temba, Hammanskraal.

She said the area had recorded the highest number of rape cases in the second quarter crime statistics for the 2021/2022 financial year.
