Double tragedy struck this weekend when a pedestrian was hit and killed by an ambulance rushing to an accident scene in Temba in which four people died, one of them a five-year-old child.
Local police are now investigating two cases of culpable homicide after the five lost their lives in Babelegi Industrial and Portion 9, R101 Road on Sunday.
“A silver-grey BMW was being chased by metro police when it crashed into an Apollo street light and four people died,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Herman Moremi.
This incident happened at Babelegi industrial near the Blue Ribbon bakery at 15:50. Police found one person next to the vehicle and four people were still trapped inside the vehicle.
Four people were certified dead on the scene – two women, a man and the five-year-old child. The driver of the vehicle that was reportedly being chased by the metro police was taken to the hospital.
Moremi said one of two ambulances that were rushing to the scene hit a man who was trying to cross the R101 road, Marokolong, next to African Cave lodge. The man died on the scene.

Moremi said when police arrived at the scene of the man who was hit by the ambulance, they found community members assaulting the emergency personnel and they immediately intervened. “Police managed to rescue the personnel from the angry crowd.
Police have registered two cases of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving.” The police appealed to community members not to take the law into their hands. “The community must understand that accidents are not planned and they must respect all emergency vehicles. When they hear sirens, they must know it is an emergency and they must give way to that particular vehicle.”
