Parents given new deadline to sort grades 1 & 8 school placements
“It must be indicated that, we have received a high volume of applications which have applied pressure to our schools capacity to accommodate learners."
Placement for grades 1 and 8 in Gauteng has been extended to the second week of December.
While the applicants who have missed the deadline to apply to grade 1 or grade 8 for the 2022 academic year will be given a chance to apply during the late application period which is set to begin on January 5, 2022.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) placement period deadline for the 2022 online admissions was meant for a cut-off date of November 30, 2021. However, due to the massive delay in some parents accepting offers, an extension was needed.
“The GDE regrets to inform unplaced parents that we are extending the placement period deadline to December 10, 2021,” Lesufi said.
“To date, the department has successfully placed 213 313 (64%) of the 335 091 applications received. The number of unplaced applicants is therefore reduced to 121 778.”
He said of those reduced in grade 1 was 43654 and grade 8, 6 459.
“It must be indicated that we have received a high volume of applications which have applied pressure to our schools capacity to accommodate learners.
“Our officials are working around the clock to manage the demand most of our schools have against the capacity that they can accommodate and what we are prioritising mostly at this stage is ensuring that learners have space in a school in Gauteng before 2022 begins.”
He plead with those who had not yet received an offer to continue checking their application status and accepting available offers of placement by logging into the GDE website: www.gdeadmissions.gov.za.
“We will be processing applications and sending out more offers throughout this extended placement period.”

Lesufi said parents were advised that offers that remained pending for more than seven days would be auto-accepted as placed to avoid further delays.
“A parent that does not prefer the offer of placement given should object by declining the offer online. Objection forms are available online.”
“Should a parent remain dissatisfied with the outcome of the objection, they may submit an appeal by declining the objection outcome online. Appeal forms are available online. “
He said as the department was committed to placing all applicants, with or without documents, it had to be noted that placement could not be made without proof of a home address.
“Applicants who have not yet submitted their proof of residence will be allowed to submit these in due course.
“We profusely apologise to those parents who are still awaiting placement notices. This is mainly because the majority of preferred schools are full and the department is trying hard to expand their capacities.
“We also call upon those who received offers to either accept or decline the offer as some parents may accept your declined offer. This will assist us in accelerating placements. Your co-operation will be highly appreciated,” said Lesufi.
