Garsfontein most prevalent crimes out in 2021

Crimes that stood out for 2021 were theft of motor vehicles and crimes against the elderly which included scams.

Crimes against the elderly and theft of motor vehicles were some of the most prevalent crimes in Garsfontein in the year 2021.

This is according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Duane Lightfoot who warned residents to be vigilant this festive season.

“Unfortunately, we learned from experience that this is also the time for criminals to enrich themselves as seen from the escalating property crimes that are normally reported during this time,” he said.

“Although our crime numbers are basically the same this year as compared to last year, we had some challenges with regards to certain crimes.”

He said crimes that stood out for 2021 were theft of motor vehicles and crimes against the elderly, which included scams.

Lightfoot said most of the vehicles were stolen from parking areas at shopping centres.

“Most of these vehicles were LDVs, especially Toyota and Ford,” he said.

“Theft of motor vehicles was our priority crime in 2021.”

With regards to crime against the elderly, he said elderly people were often scammed either by people posing as bank officials, or people who scammed them into believing that they have won money.

“We conducted numerous crime prevention operations with the help of our partners in the security sector as part of the safer season initiative and will continue to do so deep into the new year.

“We are in the process of planning a number of crime prevention strategies for the coming year, of which our newly appointed CPF will be instrumental.”

“We wish a safe and blessed festive season to all residents.”
