571 arrested in police’s intelligence operations

The operations, led by acting district commissioner Brigadier Kushie Pietersen and other law-enforcement agencies, started with the tracing of wanted suspects.

About 571 people were arrested during combined intelligence and crime prevention operations conducted in the Tshwane police district earlier this week.

The operations, led by acting district commissioner Brigadier Kushie Pietersen and other law-enforcement agencies, started with the tracing of wanted suspects.

“In total, 235 suspects were brought to book for various crimes,” Tshwane policing district spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said.

Of those who were arrested, he said 108 were arrested for gender-based violence-related crimes.

Van Dyk added that tackling GBV remained a priority for the Tshwane policing district.

During a roadblock, manned by officers from varying law-enforcement agencies, 529 vehicles and 1 036 people were searched.

“Thirty-seven undocumented immigrants were arrested and 18 infringement notices on the national Road Traffic Act were issued to the value of R9 750,” he said.

Van Dyk said a compliance and crime generating team also visited 26 premises which included shebeens, restaurants and several suspected crime premises.

“The visits resulted in the confiscation of nearly 340 litres of liquor and 10 people were arrested for dealing in liquor without licences,” he said.

A Nissan bakkie, with an engine which had been tampered with, and five unlicenced firearms were also confiscated during the operations.

The unlicenced firearms would be sent for forensic and ballistic tests to determine whether or not they had been used in the commission of crimes.

Brigadier Pietersen extended her gratitude to the law-enforcement agencies involved for their dedication and hard work.

She added that the SAPS would continue to safeguard residents.
