Police gives safety tips to parents when dropping off kids
"Awareness regarding crime and violence and its impact on individuals will be raised among learners."
Bronkhorstspruit police have issued safety tips to parents when dropping off their children at school.
Last week, all schools in Bronkhorstspruit policing precinct were visited by police as part of the annual beginning of the year rollout of the School Safety Programme.
Last Wednesday, Sergeant Khombomuni Silinda from the K9 unit was presented to Cultura High School management through Adopt a Child programme.
“The programme aims to uplift children in schools and also help deal with issues such as cyberbullying, school violence, gangsterism and drugs.”
Silinda hoped the programme would strengthen school safety committees to curb crime and violence in schools.
“This programme will link all schools with the local police station,” said Bronkhorstspruit police spokesperson Constable Munyadziwa Cathrine Ramovha.
“Awareness regarding crime and violence and its impact on individuals will be raised among learners.”
She said police would focus their efforts on engaging parents on the safety of their children when they are being dropped off and picked up from schools.
She provided the following tips to parents dropping off their children at school:
– Ensure your kid(s) have safely entered the schoolyard before driving off.
– Teach children to move away from strangers at all times, to never give or tell strangers their name or where they live.
– Do not write the child’s names or details on their backpacks or where it will be easily accessible to strangers.
– Encourage children to use the buddy system and avoid walking or playing alone outside or in public places.
– Practice basic safety skills with your child and teach them to memorise important information such as emergency contact details.
– If you suspect that your child may be missing, act immediately by reporting it at your nearest police station. There is no waiting period to report a missing child.
