New Prasa train collides with itself in Soshanguve

"The technical team upon attending to the fault by uncoupling (separating) the set experienced a roll back of the set onto the other causing a collision."

Prasa trains to Mabopane station were delayed by 30 minutes on Monday after one of the trains rolled back and collided with itself.

Prasa spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said a train set en route Mabopane station experienced a technical fault outside Soshanguve station around 05:30 and a technical team was called to attend to it.

“The technical team found that upon uncoupling, the set experienced a rollback of the set onto the other causing a collision.”

Mofekeng said there were eight staff members and no commuters on the train at the time of the incident.

“The first Metrorail train from Mabopane to Pretoria was delayed by 30 minutes and all other trains are operating on schedule.”

She said the estimated cost of the damaged new rolling stock is not yet known and assessors are at the scene to make the determination.

“No damages on the infrastructure. Investigation of the incident is underway.

“Metrorail train services are not affected and no further delays are expected.”
