Mamelodi man sentenced to 12 years for murder of girlfriend
The state asked for the maximum prescribed sentence because Mahlangu committed the offence in the presence of very young children.
A Mamelodi man was sentenced to 12 years for killing his girlfriend.
Last Friday, the Pretoria High Court sentenced Sipho Frans Mahlangu (37) from Mamelodi East to 12 years imprisonment for the murder of Phindile Christabel Nsingwane.
Mahlangu was convicted after he pleaded guilty to killing the mother of two children, a boy (10) and a girl (7) on February 4, 2021.
North Gauteng NPA regional spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana said Mahlangu was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
“Mahlangu arrived at the home he shared with the deceased and upon his arrival, he saw a man run out. That’s when he went inside the house and found his girlfriend naked on top of the bed,” said Mahanjana.
A fight broke out between the two, Mahlangu started assaulting Nsingwane with a plank, shovel and broken bottle in the presence of her children.
Mahanjana said afterwards he left with the two children.
The following day early in the morning, he called the neighbour to go check at his place. The neighbour found her lifeless body on top of the blood-stained bed.
“He called the police and Mahlangu was arrested the same day at his mother’s place at KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga,” said Mahanjana.
The suspect has been in custody after his bail application was denied since his arrest.

However, the judge said during his judgment, “Mahlangu will have to live the rest of his life with what he did, and his children will never respect him for his actions”.
Mahanjana said the deceased’s brother, who is now the primary caregiver of the children, testified in court that the children were not coping, and they called out for their mother in their sleep.
“They are also not performing well at school, such that the young one failed the previous year, however, the children are attending counselling.”
The NPA welcomed the sentence and thanked officer Sergeant Moloko Jack Diphofa for his diligence that led to the conviction and sentencing.
