Metro refurbishing east ECD centres

“I am happy to report that there has been significant improvement at many of these centres as refurbishments done include kitchen designs, repairing leaking geyser pipes and replacing broken hand wash basins and toilets,” says the MMC.

The Tshwane metro has refurbished some city-owned early childhood development (ECD) centres in the east of Pretoria, saying they will only be re-opened once they are fully refurbished and Covid regulations were adhered to.

The centres are Itirileng Preschool, Tiendleleni Preschool, Mabolepi Mahlatsi Preschool and Mmagobatho Preschool.

MMC for Social Development and Community Services, Peggy De Bruin said the metro was on track with the maintenance work.

“My department has been making steady progress with the maintenance work at city-owned ECD centres.”

She said the state of compliance would be in line with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 and the city’s strategic objectives.

De Bruin said the first phase of the metro’s ECD centre maintenance project was to ensure that facilities offered safe and healthy environments for children to thrive.

“As the MMC responsible for the centres, I have been conducting site visits at the ones throughout region 6.”

“I am happy to report that there has been significant improvement at many of these centres as refurbishments were done include kitchen designs, repairing leaking geyser pipes and replacing broken handwashing basins and toilets,” said De Bruin.

She said four ECD centres had received paint aimed at bringing to life the aesthetic appearance of these centres.

She said asset verifications were done and that the ECD centres had put in place safety measures in terms of Covid-19 compliance and fire safety protocols.

“The city is in the process of arranging fire safety training sessions for all these centres.”

De Bruin said ECD facilities were crucial for children’s social and cognitive development.

“We have a responsibility as a society to protect the future of our children.

“Considering the recent vandalism at schools and other public properties, I would like to encourage our communities to take charge in leading the fight against these acts of criminality and theft of our infrastructure. Together, let us protect our children’s future,” De Bruin said.
