WARNING: Secure your home and car to prevent crime
“When it comes to theft of motor vehicle, we want to urge the community to be extra vigilant.”

Garsfontein police have warned residents and motorists to be cautious when it comes to your house and car.
According to crime information analyses centre, if projected, crimes like theft of motor vehicle and house burglary could become problematic in the area.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Duane Lightfoot said although the current crime picture was not much different as opposed to the previous year, the Garsfontein police wanted to make an early positive impact to fight crime this year.
“When it comes to theft of motor vehicle, we want to urge the community to be extra vigilant,” he said.
“Try to make use of all available security devices to protect your vehicle. Be cautious of the surrounding area where your vehicle is parked.”
Lightfoot said most of these incidents usually take place at shopping malls, businesses and residential premises.
He advised owners to make sure they park at secure areas where there are security guards and boom gates.
“Popular vehicles to steal are SUVs, and more especially Toyota Hilux bakkies,” he said.
“With regard to burglary, there are a number of measures that can be put in place to reduce the risk of becoming a target.
“Make sure that all available security devices are functional and make sure it is activated, especially at night.”
When it comes to protecting property Lightfoot said housebreaking incidents could sometimes turn into house robberies if the occupants are present in the house.
He advised residents to cut down any vegetation from windows and the street that criminals could use to hide.
“Install proper lighting to eliminate any possible dark corners in your yard. Lights that work on a motion sensor can be very effective,” he said.
“We also want to suggest that residents join one or more of the many security groups on the social media networks. Most of these groups are well connected with various security companies in the area which can subsequently assist with rapid response were needed.”
Lightfoot said various prevention units were working intelligence driven operations according to crime tendencies to curb incidents but still needed the help of the community.
“Together we can make a difference and take control of crime in 2022.”
