Local radio station donates school uniforms and shoes

The donation is part of an ongoing Mams Radio’s back-to-school campaign which started last year.

A local radio station, with listeners’ help, donated school uniforms and shoes to children coming from disadvantaged families.

The donation was part of an ongoing Mams Radio’s back-to-school campaign which started last year.

Sipho Motau operations manager at Mams Radio said the campaign started last year with the donation of sanitary pads and will go throughout the year.

“This year, we have asked our listeners on-air to help with the donation of school uniforms and school shoes,” said Motau.

“We have already donated to Legora, Meetsi a Bophelo, Phela dinakedi primary school and Nellmapius secondary school,” said Motau.

The schools we have identified seriously need help because they are from informal settlements and most of the learners come from disadvantaged families and other social issues in their different families.

Motau said they felt that they needed to do something for the learners and the campaign was also part of giving back.

He added they are planning to come back to the identified schools for the back-to-school winter campaign whereby they will be donating school jerseys to keep children warm in winter.

“We started the school campaign because some of us grew up going to school without school uniforms and school shoes,” he said.

Mams Radio also partnered with Thusa Ngwaneno non-profit organisation for the book covering campaign set to cover books for Mamelodi learners in the far east of Mamelodi.

The book covering campaign will take place at Legora primary school in Mamelodi and community members are invited to come and help with covering books and donations.

Mams Radio crew also interacted with school children and advised learners to focus on their school and respect the teachers and always stay away from drugs and crime.

They further encouraged learners to take their education very seriously and they focus on their studies because they no longer look different to other learners.

“Children cannot attend school barefoot and if they don’t have shoes, they don’t go to school. If they don’t receive an education, our children don’t have the opportunity to realise their potential,” he concluded.

Principal of Legora primary school, Mohlamme Mathebe, said the donation came at the right time.

“The school have enrolled over 2 000 learners and most come from poor backgrounds,” said Mathebe.

About 50% of parents are unemployed and some learners come from families affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mathebe said the school appreciates the generous donations and pleaded with the locals to help with school jerseys as we are approaching winter.
