Man gets 25 years for rape, robbery

Saneti Mhlambi (37) was convicted of rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances and contravention of the immigration act, as he was a Zimbabwean national who is in the country illegally.

A man was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment on Tuesday in the Pretoria North magistrate’s court.

Saneti Mhlambi (37) was convicted of rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances and contravention of the immigration act, as he was a foreign national who is in the country illegally.

NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said on June 14, 2019, in the evening a 25-year-old woman was walking from school after a taxi dropped her off at Soshanguve Block XX.

Mahanjana said while the woman was walking past Mhlambi, he immediately grabbed her school bag and threatened her with a knife, forcing her to the bushes.

“He raped her while he had the knife next to the victim. She grabbed the knife and stabbed him in the chest. As they struggled over the knife, Mhlambi managed to disarm the victim and continued to rape her.

“After the rape ordeal, Mahlambi took two cellphones from the victim’s school bag, R150 and a purse with bank cards and left.

The incident happened only three houses away from her home.

“When she arrived home, she told her family what had happened and was then rushed to the police station to report the case.”

Mahanjana said Mhlambi was arrested the same day at George Academic Mukhari hospital in Ga-Rankuwa where he was kept under police guard until he was discharged. He remained in custody since his arrest.

She said Mhlambi pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.

“The victim testified on how the incident has affected her life such that she no longer trusts men.”

She said that the incident has also affected her relationship with her father, whom she no longer trusts but was very close to and considered him to be her best friend.

Prosecutor David Molokomme reminded the court that the incident happened close to the victim’s place of residence.

“She passes the scene frequently and can see it from her house.

“Therefore, this will delay her process of healing.”

He added that Mhlambi showed no remorse throughout the entire process.

Mahanjana said the NPA welcomed the sentence.
