Two arrested in Pta West for illegal dumping
“Each offender then received a section 56 fine with three charges which totaled R20 000 per offender.”
Pretoria residents are warned against illegal dumping after two people were arrested in Pretoria West.
MMC for community safety Grandi Theunissen said recently Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) caught the two using their vehicles to dump waste illegally along Bremer Street.
“Both offenders’ vehicles were impounded for evidentiary purposes,” he said.
“Each offender received a section 56 fine with three charges which totaled R20 000 per offender.”
Following a court representation, the fines were reduced to R3 000 per offender.
Their vehicles were subsequently released when the admission of guilt fines were paid.
“The Tshwane metro would like to send out a strong warning that illegal dumping will not be tolerated, the law will be applied against offenders,” Theunissen said.
“Under section 27 of the National Environmental Management: waste act 59 of 2008, no person may throw, drop, deposit, spill or in any other way discard any litter into or onto any public place, land, vacant stand, stream, watercourse, street or road, or on any place to which the general public has access, except in a container or a place specifically provided for that purpose.”
Perpetrators who are in violation of this act can be fined an amount between R500 and R10 000.
He said illegal dumping was an ongoing problem in the metro and posed a health risk to residents.
“Dumping sites serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, cockroaches, and rodents that often spread life-threatening diseases.
“We must work together to safeguard our environment and keep our city clean.”
Residents are urged to report illegal dumping to the TMPD on 012 358 7095/7096.
