One lane open on N1 around sinkhole as repair work undertaken
“The duration thereof will be approximately five hours. We plan to do it on Sunday night from around 23:00 until 04:00.”
The South African Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) plans to work on the sinkhole on the N1 southbound just after the R21 turn-off that will affect traffic flow.

Progress Hlahla, manager of Sanral’s northern region said Sanral was planning to do additional geotechnical investigations in the fast lanes of the highway.
“This will further our knowledge of the current situation, which will aid our designs on further work to be done. The duration thereof will be approximately five hours. We plan to do it on Sunday night from around 23:00 until 04:00.”

Hlahla said only one lane will be kept open and motorists should consider alternative routes.
The sinkhole formed at the beginning of January.
Rekord reported earlier that Sanral addressed the diversion of storm water recently and created a new drainage system to move the water away from the sinkhole for it not to expand.
Cracks appeared on the freeway, which Sanral reportedly sealed.
A geological assessment report was compiled and received by Sanral, but it remains an internal document for now. It was established that an area of 150m was affected.
Hlahla encouraged motorists to drive in accordance with the yellow regulatory signs indicating speed limits that Sanral placed in the area.
“Do not stop in the area to have a look at the hole, or to take photos of it.”
Hlahla said repairing the hole remained Sanral’s key priority.
