Tshwane might suffer water outage again as Rand Water hit by power failure

Residents in Tshwane who had their water supply restored today may be in for a nasty surprise as Rand Water again suffered a power outage.

This could mean that their water supply can be interrupted – again.

Residents in high-lying areas whose water hasn’t been restored yet might now even wait longer.

Early on Wednesday morning, the Tshwane metro announced that water was slowly returning to areas in Pretoria affected by the water outage at the weekend and earlier this week.

On Tuesday afternoon, Rand Water said water pumping resumed at full capacity to its Mapleton booster station in Ekurhuleni.

The booster station suffered low levels of water due to Eskom’s transformer that tripped on Friday.

This led to the water supply to Tshwane’s Vlakfontein reservoir running low and leaving several suburbs without water.

On Wednesday afternoon, Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale said the water utility experienced yet another complete power failure at the City of Ekurhuleni substation.

“City of Ekurhuleni technicians are currently busy with fault-finding,” he said.

“The expected time to complete the repairs is not known.”

“Should the restoration of power be prolonged, this may result in Rand Water’s reservoirs running completely empty. It will result in a total reversal of the gains made yesterday. Furthermore, total water supply interruptions are likely to occur in some areas.”

Tshwane water and electricity MMC Phillip Nel said it was critical for residents to use water sparingly during this period to best protect the City’s reservoir levels.

“We are working closely with City of Ekurhuleni and Rand Water and doing everything we can to ensure water returns to all areas of Tshwane as soon as possible.” This is a developing story.
