SuperSport suffer 6th defeat of season

The Pretoria side squandered the opportunity of jumping to third place.

SuperSport United suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of Maritzburg United in the DStv Premiership encounter on Tuesday night.

The Pretoria side squandered the opportunity of jumping to third place after Rowan Human scored the winner for the home team at Harry Gwala Stadium.

United made their intentions clear at the beginning of the match as they were in search of an early lead. Although the pressure kept on mounting for the visitors, Ronwen Williams in goals made a few saves to keep the score 0-0.

In the 40th minute, the skipper cleared a corner-kick that nearly went into the back of the net, however, the deadlock was broken on the stroke of half-time from the boot of Friday Samu as Matsatsabtsa defence failed to deal with the cross.

At the beginning of the first half, Kudakwashe Mahachi came off the bench for Selaelo Rasebotja.

Although Matsatsantsa started the second half by chasing the score, Kuda’s presence made an instant impact.

In the 47th minute, defender Luke Fleurs’ effort went wide after he managed to get the ball under control.

Matsatsantsa continued searching for an equalizer as Moses Ndhondhi’s effort went over the post in the 52nd minute.

Two minutes later young midfielder Jesse Donn equalized with a brilliant header after a superb delivery from substitute Mahachi’s set-piece.

In the 65th minute, another opportunity for the home side was cleared by right-back Keenan Phillips as Tawanda Macheke was ready to pounce.

In the 67th minute, Gamphani Lungu’s header was caught by Maritzburg keeper Marcel Engelhardt after the visitors won a corner kick.

In the 70th minute, Mahachi’s deep cross from the left was saved by Maritzburg keeper as there was no one ready for a tap in.

Maritzburg netted their second goal in the 72nd minute as the Matsatsantsa defence failed to close Rowan Human who scored with ease from a well-orchestrated move.

In the 76th minute, coach Kaitano Tembo made a double substitution as Sifiso Ngobeni made his maiden appearance in the Matsatsantsa colours for veteran Onismor Bhasera whereas Moses Ndhondhi made way for Thapelo Maseko.

In the 83rd minute, Ritchies’ free-kick ricocheted off the Matsatsantsa wall after Jamie Webber’s wrongful tackle to Samu.

In the 88th minute, Lungu missed an equalizing opportunity as his header went wide from a well-taken corner kick.

The score finished 2-1 in favour of the home team.
