Upgrades to the Pilditch stadium paying off

Tshwane metro invested over R30-million to upgrade the stadium to international athletics standards.

Refurbished Pilditch stadium is up and running after the City of Tshwane invested R30-million for upgrades last year.

At the weekend, Prestige College hosted its inter-high school athletics meeting at the facility.

Social development and community services MMC, Peggy de Bruin said the decision to invest in the upgrading of the stadium was paying off.

“I had the opportunity to attend and show my support for the inter-high school athletics event hosted by Prestige College at our newly-refurbished Pilditch stadium. I was pleased to note that this athletics event turned out to be a great success with many high school athletes competing for gold.”

De Bruin said sport and physical activities played a big role in the development of children.

“For almost two years, schools across the country were unable to host sporting events for learners due to Covid-19, and it was amazing to see learners out in the field competing against each other,” she said.

De Bruin said the metro invested more than R30-million to upgrade the stadium to international athletics standards, as certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

The upgrades include new synthetic athletics and training tracks, a new irrigation system on the inner field and embankments, upgrades of the long jump pits and many other items.

“It is critically important that the city invests in our sporting facilities as they provide opportunities for young people to develop their sporting skills,” she said.
