West police visits school for drug awareness talks
The visit to the school comes after a complaint from the school about learners engaging in drugs.
Pretoria West police made their way to the Lotus Gardens secondary school to embark on a drug awareness campaign.
The police, with other social workers from Sithuthukise Bonke Crisis Centre and community safety visited the school after complaints about learners being involved in drugs.
The visit to the school comes after a complaint from the school about learners engaging in drugs, said Pretoria West police spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma.

“The mandate of the police is to ensure a safe environment for all. Our purpose at the school was to intervene and sensitise the learners about the disadvantages of taking drugs while in school and the effect of drugs,” she said.
“We warned them that if one of them is found in possession of drugs on the school premises, they would get arrested.”
Vuma said a question and answer session was conducted whereby learners were given a platform to engage with the police and social workers.
“The next police visit to the school will be an unexpected one and a drug search by our trained drug-sniffing dogs will be conducted. Any learner found in possession of drugs after this awareness talk run the chance of being expelled.”

Vuma said the police station was available for assistance with counselling for learners.
“Those learners who are already addicted and unable to get off the drugs, should feel free to contact the social workers.”
Drugs and substances abuse pamphlets were issued to the teachers to share with the learners.
