Veteran traffic officer retires
Gauteng traffic police deputy director Alfred Mabidilala is retiring after more than 40 years.
Veteran Gauteng traffic police deputy director Alfred Mabidilala was retiring after 43 years of service.
“I have run my marathon,” he said.
“I have done what I have always wanted to, what my managers and the citizens of Gauteng province requested me to do – to enhance safety on the roads.”
Mabidilala (65) made the remarks during a function that recognised his contribution to enhancing safety on the roads in the province at the Roodeplaat Dam last week.
The deputy director became a traffic officer in 1979 when he was enlisted as a Grade 2 provincial inspector at the Transvaal Provincial Administrator.
During his time there, Mabidilala said he worked in a very orderly fashion where discipline was not compromised.
“I worked in an environment where professionalism was a priority,” he said.
Mabidilala served for 16 years until he was promoted to principal provincial inspector and was later transferred to Tshwane.
“Upon my arrival in Tshwane, the officers that I was tasked to lead were ill-disciplined and underperforming which was a daunting challenge for me. I then had to derive strategies to get them to work with purpose and determination to meet the required service delivery standards,” he said.
“Deputy director Mabidilala also gave us valuable inputs towards the operational plan for Easter and festive holidays, so he is leaving behind a rich legacy,” Tshwane SAPS district representative Colonel Isaac Madala Mhlongo said.
One of Mabidilala’s colleagues, Joseph Mokoka, wished him well in his retirement.
He was the Gauteng traffic police’s director for the northern corridor.
“You always listened. You always had something constructive to say and you always offered support and encouragement with an unflagging spirit. I have learned so much from you and I will miss working with you,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety wished Mabidilala a happy retirement.
