Celtisdal residents want answers

"The money to cut grass comes straight out of residents’ pockets."

Roaming wild horses and tall grass are only two of the things that irk Celtisdal, Centurion residents about a vacant stretch of land in the area.

“The grass hasn’t been cut in over two years,” said resident Sarel Broodryk of the piece of land opposite the estate where he lives.

“Thus, residents have taken to trimming it out of their own pockets. When the metro does send someone out to cut the grass, they only have weed eaters that can’t cut the grass because it is too thick and tall.

“The money to cut the grass instead comes straight out of residents’ pockets. We can’t keep on doing this, but it has to be done.”

The grass also poses a fire risk during the winter when the grass is dry and veldt fires happen frequently in this area.

Broodryk said many of his fellow residents shared his frustration with the state of the neighbourhood.

“This is such a nice place to live and we shouldn’t have to deal with all of this,” said Broodryk.

Residents recently burnt a small strip of grass close to the estate’s walls in the event of a fire.

He was equally frustrated with the state of Rooihuiskraal Road where the grass has started encroaching onto the road.

Homeless people have also started putting up structures where they can’t be seen in the tall grass.

“This is a safety and security worry,” said Broodryk.

“We all pay taxes for the metro to look after our roads and keep everything neat. Instead, we get this.”

The Tshwane metro has yet to provide any comment at the time of going to press.
