Increase in house robberies leads to CCTV installation in The Orchards

To curb the scourge of house robberies and break-ins the CPF initiated the installation of CCTV cameras in most parts of The Orchards and are busy installing them in the rest of the area.”

Police are appealing to the community to help them by reporting any information they might have that could lead to the arrest of perpetrators that continue to terrorise the community in housebreak-ins recorded in the police precinct.

Constable Lindiwe Mabasa, spokesperson for Akasia police, said there had been a rise in house robberies in the area recently and police were on their toes with investigations to ensure that those responsible face the full might of the law.

“Police have partnered with the Community Policing Forum (CPF) to ensure a safe environment for residents in the north.

“To curb the scourge of house robberies and break-ins the CPF initiated the installation of CCTV cameras in most parts of The Orchards and are busy installing them in the rest of the area.”

She said since the installation of these devices there had been a decrease in incidents of house break-ins and criminals seem to have migrated to areas where there aren’t such devices.

“Deputy Chairperson Paulina Seboloki said the devices have changed the lives of the residents because now they can resume their daily tasks without fear of their homes being broken into.”

She said the CCTV cameras detect every movement and suspicious vehicles on the street and were linked with residents’ phones.

She added that all the community patrollers will engage and mobilise the police for backup.

Ward 4 councillor Petrus Malope said he was aware that the area experienced a lot of house break-ins.

“I, however, don’t have any statistics available and cannot confirm a decrease in crime due to devices installed to curb crime.”
