Eersterust teen qualifies for SA Pool championship

"I come from a big family, and everyone enjoys playing a game of pool. We are a competitive bunch but I always win, I even beat my father now."

Being born into a family of pool players has finally paid off for Eersterust teen, Shaquille Ryan.

“I come from a big family, and everyone enjoys playing a game of pool. We are a competitive bunch but I always win, I even beat my father now,” said Shaquille.

The 16-year-old, who is currently in Grade 10, has won both local and international titles. Locally Ryan represents 8 Ball Kings and Queens and nationally the Gauteng Terminators.

In June this year Ryan will represent the province at the u.18 South African Black Ball Pool Championship in Bloemfontein.

“I am very excited and nervous to go to the championship, but with support from my family I know I will do well,” said Shaquille.

When asked how he juggles playing pool and schoolwork, he said he would first have a practice pool session after school before doing his chores and completing his homework.

His father Walter said he was very proud of Shaquille and all his achievements.

“My son has always been someone who is very active, he’s not a difficult boy and does not give us trouble or get involved with the wrong crowd,” said Walter.

He added that he had noticed his son’s love for the game and would always support his passion.

The family has started reaching out for donors and sponsors to pay for Shaquille’s trip to Bloemfontein.

“We are so thankful for the support we have been receiving so far. We have managed to pay for my son’s registration and his T-shirt. Although we do need much more to get him ready, we are hopeful that this will all come in time,” said Walter.
