Soshanguve youth helps peers make the right choices

“Due to a lack of knowledge, learners end up choosing wrong fields of study."

Soshanguve matric learners will no longer miss an opportunity of going to university as MJ Substructure organisation assists them with applications.

“We started during our gap year because we didn’t know which courses we should take. We don’t want other learners to go through the same fate,” said the founder of the organisation, Makgake Jacob Mokwala.

The 24-year-old man said a team of over 24 members was formed and started researching about universities.

Makwala said learners miss opportunities of going to universities because they lack information about applications and don’t know where to start when applying.

MJ Substructure is an NPO which motivate, tutor and assists learners with universities applications for free.

“The purpose of this organisation is to guide and assist learners with appropriate information regarding tertiary applications.

“Our work is to actually guide the learners to know what careers to choose and why they must choose them.

“Due to a lack of knowledge, learners end up choosing wrong fields of study,” he said.

Mokwala said the campaign will positively impact the youth by the motivation and information shared with them.

“Learners will have more information on what careers to follow.

“Our brothers and sisters need us for them to succeed in tertiary.

“We also learn more about other careers that are available when we do research,” he said.

Mokwala said the challenges that he faced after completing his matric propelled him to try and help others.

“I didn’t know much about others careers, the only courses I knew were teaching and nursing.”

“I don’t want their future to be ruined due to insufficient information,” he said.

Mokwala said he saw a need for such a campaign in his community because it lacked motivational speakers.

“Learners need people who will motivate them for them to follow the right paths in life,” he said.

Mokwala said they have visited Leshiane high school and they plan on visiting other schools.
