The man was one of the five suspects involved in a shoot-out with security guards after they were caught stealing railway cables at the Rayton train station last year.

Cullinan police welcomed the 10 years direct imprisonment sentence handed to Thabang Matibiti (20) for stealing railway cables.

Matibiti was one of five suspects who were involved in a shoot-out with security guards after they were caught stealing railway cables at the Rayton train station in May of last year, according to police spokesperson sergeant, Connie Moganedi.

He was sentenced last week for tampering with and damaging essential infrastructure.

The case was handled by Detective Sergeant Mngwenya, who together with his team, ensured Matibiti’s conviction and the sentencing
on April 7.

Cullinan SAPS applauded Ngwenya and his team for their “good work and thorough investigation”.

“We urge the community to continue blowing the whistle on any criminal activity threatening the safety and economy of the country.”

Moganedi said members of the public can report any suspicious-looking persons to the police by dialling 08600 10 111.
