Metro condemns attack on emergency service workers
The two emergency service department workers were forced to abandon the patient and their vehicle, out of fear of their lives.
The Tshwane metro condemned an attack on two of its emergency service personnel workers as they served a community in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, last week.
“I strongly condemn the recent attack on City of Tshwane emergency services workers who were attacked while in the process of serving our communities,” Tshwane emergency services department spokesperson Charles Mabaso said.
The incident took place in Mahube Valley extension 1 on April 13.
Mabaso said the two emergency services personnel were threatened with violence and their ambulance damaged.
In fear of their lives, the pair subsequently abandoned the patient they were attending to and their vehicle.
“The city’s emergency services workers should be in a position to feel safe while discharging their duties and it is completely unacceptable that these men and women must operate in these conditions,” he said.
He also called on communities to work with them to remove the “few” criminal elements in their communities by reporting them to the police.
“This behaviour not only creates fear and panic among the emergency service workers, but it also affects our response times to emergencies and disrupts service delivery to our communities,” Mabaso said.
In 2018, three Tshwane emergency service paramedics were robbed at gunpoint as they attended to a patient in the back of a metro ambulance in Soshanguve, block GG.
The two armed robbers forced the paramedics to hand over their cash, cellphones and personal belongings before they fled the scene.
The paramedics did not sustain any serious injuries.
