Community to assist KwaZulu-Natal flood victims

The various teams involved are working non-stop to sort boxes with the hopes of sending the first needed items by next week.

Multiple organisations, churches and Laerskool Pierneef are gathering goods to help with the relief effort after deadly floods hit large parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Lewende Woord and the Funanani trust has built trust relationships with Heal our Land and the Domino Foundation who have extensive experience in disaster relief.

According to Ronel Rademeyer of the trust, they are confident that donations are responsibly managed and distributed by these relief agencies.

“As we all know by now, the loss of lives and devastation to homes and livelihoods in certain parts of KwaZulu-Natal is so extreme that it will take months to try and rebuild some of these areas.

“Numerous search and rescue teams are still busy looking for people and pets, and the trauma people have experienced is overwhelming,” said Rademeyer.

She added that Heal our Land and Domino Foundation are recognised as one of the official relief agencies by eThekwini disaster management and work with families and numerous of the community halls which have been set up as shelters to the many displaced families.

“We will continue to gather goods in partnership with the Domino Foundation team in Gauteng and mobilise trucks in a week to take the donations down to their base in KZN.”

“The Domino Foundation is a registered NPO and public benefit organisation with a desire to see individuals and communities within South Africa living in dignity, justice, hope and purpose.

“Through their eight focused community transformation initiatives, Domino directly impacts the lives of over 13 500 individuals daily, across KZN. The foundation is 100% compliant in terms of the B-BBEE codes, and is able to offer companies and individuals’ maximum benefit based on their donations and seeks to collaborate with new partners to continue the #DominoEffect of changing lives.”

Member of the school governing body at Laerskool Pierneef, Jannie Geyer said they have an opportunity to assist and that they did not think twice to ask the public’s help.

“We want to show again that our school cares, wider than just in our community,” said Geyer.

Drop-off points are at Lewende Woord in Brummeria between 08:00 and 18:00, or at Laerskool Pierneef in Villieria and at Brewers restaurant in Rietfontein.
