Pretoria Zoo welcomes second giraffe calf – in less than two years
Baby Gio was born on Monday to mum Momosa and both are in great health.
The National Zoological Garden, better known as the Pretoria Zoo, welcomed another Southern giraffe calf at the zoo – the second in the past 19 months.
Baby Gio was born on Monday, April 11 to mum Momosa, and both are in great health.
Gio’s older brother, Tiego, had to be hand-reared as Momosa was not feeding him; she was a first-time mum.

But this time around, Momosa has accepted Gio and the calf is suckling well.
Tiego was born in September 2020 and is in the camp with Momosa, dad Bonita and little Gio.

Before Tiego’s birth, the last calf to be born at the zoo was about 20 years ago.
Zoo spokesperson, Marcel Singh said the sex of the calf is yet to be determined.
The Southern giraffe is considered a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The giraffe is found in the savannahs and woodlands of northern South Africa, Angola, southern Botswana, southern Zimbabwe, Zambia and south-western Mozambique.
