Two men nabbed for possession of syringes and drugs
Nyaope addicts use syringes to draw blood from a high user to inject into the veins of another user to share the high.
Two men, aged between 30 and 40, were arrested in the Pretoria CBD over the Easter weekend for the possession of drugs and drug-related paraphernalia.
The men were arrested after police received a tip-off about drug dealers at the corner of Bosman and Scheiding streets, according to police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.
He said the police followed up on the information and they were caught with grams of nyaope and a stack of syringes.
Nkhumise added that the suspects appeared before the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Tuesday, April 19.

The arrests came after Pretoria Central police station joined forces with other law agencies and various security companies during the Easter period.
“Operation Paseka” is an annual crime prevention campaign aimed at fighting against crime during Easter.
In 2017, Rekord reported on a method that addicts use to get high using syringes.
This method is known across Pretoria as “nyaope Bluetooth” and addicts use it to save money or help other addicts who can’t afford to buy nyaope to get a quick fix.

One person sniffs or smokes nyaope and then draws blood from his veins using a syringe.
The same syringe with blood is then injected into the veins of another addict so that the high could be shared between two or more users.
The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) said this method could infect users with diseases such as HIV.
Nkhumise urged members of the community with information on such crimes to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or dial 122 from any network provider.
