Another day, another new Centurion sinkhole
“It’s terrifying how quickly sinkholes form,” said ward councillor David Farquharson.
Lyttelton residents were horrified earlier this week when a large sinkhole opened up on Clifton Avenue.
Commuters had to use alternative routes and Clifton Avenue was closed to the public.
On Tuesday morning, metro workers could be seen repairing the hole.
Sinkholes have become a major concern in the Centurion area and have started to stretch the metro’s finances.
“It’s terrifying how quickly sinkholes form,” said ward councillor David Farquharson.
“This one was quite dangerous as in the early morning it looked like just a shadow on the road.
“I’m very grateful to the members of the CPF who blocked off the danger zone with traffic cones, tapes and dustbins while the metro team made their way to the scene.”
He says the CPF’s actions possibly saved the life of a cyclist or motorist.
“The city geologists are investigating the hole. It will be prioritised and added to the list of sinkholes in this city,” added Farquharson.
Comment from the metro will be published as soon as it has been received.
