Two learners wounded in cross-fire, man shot several times
“We don't know if the shooting is gang-related," says community leader.
Two learners, aged between 10 and 17, were caught in the crossfire when a man was shot and killed in Atteridgeville on the corner of Makaza and Masupha streets on Tuesday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses claim that the man was shot 27 times; however, police could not confirm this.
“We are still waiting for a formal post-mortem report, which will give us a clear indication of how many gunshots he had to his body,” said police spokesperson Constable Mandlakayise Zwane.
“I wouldn’t like to speculate, but he was shot several times in his upper body.”
Zwane said the learners sustained several gunshot wounds to their legs and they were taken to hospital.
“A case of attempted murder has been opened.”
Zwane said they are still not sure what the motive for the killing might be.
“We are appealing to the community or anyone with information regarding this incident to call the nearest police station and share the information with us. We will ensure that their identities are kept secret.”
He said the police were also concerned about the number of people shot and killed in the Atteridgeville area.
“It worries us because it creates a serious panic and a lot of uncertainty within our communities.”
Community leader Samuel Masilela said the community were worried about the number of shootings in the area.
Masilela said in most cases, the shootings happened in the afternoon in full view of residents and children.
“We still can’t figure out why these shootings are taking place. We don’t know what the fight is about. We don’t know whether it’s gang members fighting each other,” Masilela concluded.
