Vehicle-related crimes increase in Akasia

According to police, these crimes were common at shopping centres.

Vehicle-related crimes were on the rise in the Akasia policing precinct, police in the area said this week.

“There have been incidents of theft out of motor vehicles at shopping centres and neighbouring places,” police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mabasa said.

To curb this, she urged motorists to avoid leaving their valuables in places where they were visible from the outside when they parked their vehicles.

“This may attract criminals to break into the vehicle and steal the items,” Mabasa said.

Vehicle-related related crimes were predominantly a problem in the Pretoria North and Sinoville policing precincts with house robberies being more common in Akasia.

On several occasions, Sinoville police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk told Rekord that theft out of and of motor vehicles was a problem in his precinct.

Some of the safety tips the police offered to avoid falling victim to such crimes included:

– Physically testing the doors and windows of their vehicles to see if they were locked and completely closed before walking away.

– Not handing anyone their keys, regardless of how well they knew the person.

– Parking in designated parking bays.

– Installing gear-lock systems.
