Awareness campaign held at north school
“When we visit some of these schools, it is not because they have a problem,” said Selepe.
Police held an awareness campaign on drugs, child pornographic material and bullying at Pretoria North high school on Wednesday.
School awareness programmes in Tshwane are in anticipation of Child Protection week, according to police spokesperson Captain Augustin Selepe.
This week is commemorated in the country annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in South Africa’s constitution.
The Pretoria North police station’s social crime prevention co-ordinator and sector manager as well as members of its crisis centre were also part of the campaign.
Selepe said they focused on children’s educational programmes.
“When we visit some of these schools, it is not because they have a problem,” said Selepe.
“It is just to maintain stability and to create awareness on topics such as bullying, cyberbullying sexual assaults and violence.”
Selepe said they also discussed teenage pregnancies and self-respect.
“Learners were told of the importance of taking care of themselves and respecting their bodies,” she said.
Selepe said they were told not to fall prey to peer pressure and to think twice about the consequences of their actions before they act.
“They were also advised to report such incidents to their parents, educators or police.”
