Mams police do a surprise school search at local school
Police were responding to a complaint from the school management about learners carrying dangerous weapons and using drugs at the school.
A surprise search at a local school in Mamelodi East by police yielded results after a learner was found in possession of a knife.
This came after the Mamelodi East police, together with the CPF held a surprise school search on Friday.
Police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said they were responding to a complaint from the school management about learners carrying dangerous weapons, gangsterism and using drugs at the school.
“The surprise school search operation was conducted in the classrooms and every learner was searched, including their school bags,” said Mashiloane.
The surprise search was part of the police safety school programme.
Mashiloane added that the surprise search was aimed at educating learners about carrying dangerous weapons, drugs, bullying, sex offences and human trafficking.
“The learner found in possession of a knife will be working with his parent and teachers to make sure he doesn’t carry a dangerous weapon again,” he added.
The police’s social crime division told learners using drugs will destroy their future and they will end up in jail.
Mashiloane added that they also encouraged learners not to talk to strangers and to walk in groups to avoid human trafficking.
They further advised learners who are bullied at school to speak up to their teachers and the school will inform the police.
He added there will be more similar surprise school safety programmes held at Mamelodi schools.
The police and CPF proceeded to Stanza Bopape community hall where they engaged with pre-school children for the children’s rights awareness campaign.
They were joined by eight daycare centres.
Mashiloane said that the community must take charge of their local schools and pre-schools by reporting any wrongdoing to the police.
Report any criminal activities to the police by dialling 08600 10111 or 112.
