Thieves now stealing copper house numbers

Thieves allegedly steal and sell these numbers on the black market for their copper, according to Le Roux.

Centurion residents were advised to be on the lookout after a private security company recently caught two suspected thieves stealing metal and copper house numbers in the Doringkloof area.

JP le Roux of Monitor Net and his team found multiple suspects with metal and copper house numbers in their possession on Monday evening.

“Vigilant Doringkloof community patrollers noticed the suspects removing the house numbers.”

The patrollers called in reinforcements. Monitor Net officers responded and upon arrival, the suspects were found in possession of stolen house numbers.

The suspects were taken into custody by the Lyttelton SAPS.

“Lyttelton and Doringkloof have seen an increase of post boxes and house numbers being stolen in the last few months,” said Le Roux.

“Monitor Net and the Doringkloof community will stand together in fighting this crime.”

Thieves steal and sell these numbers on the black market for their copper, according to Le Roux.

Suspects were found carrying stolen house numbers.

Le Roux urged residents to be aware of these thefts and report them if they fall victim to them.

“We ask people to open up cases with the police if their house numbers are stolen or if they see any suspicious activities,” he said.

Lyttleton police spokesperson Dave Miller confirmed that the two suspects have been arrested and will be tried for possession of suspected stolen property.

Miller thanked the members of the community and the local CPF for their work in helping in arresting the two suspects.

He advised residents to fasten their house numbers with superglue as tightly as possible.

“Residents need to get involved in their communities to keep safe.

“The CPF has helped us out in many arrests and I advise all residents of Centurion to join their nearest CPF.

“They should also notify the police and security companies whenever they see suspicious activities in their area immediately,” said Miller.

Lyttelton police said they will increase visible policing in an attempt to bring the crime statistics down and give residents peace of mind.
