Pre-school children in Mamelodi East learn about safety

The aim of the event is to teach children about their rights at an early age and where to report crime.

Ten pre-schools from Mamelodi East held a child protection awareness walk on Friday.

This event is an annual event organised for Early childhood development centres by Kids First Forum.

Kgomotso Molokomme from Kids First Forum said the awareness campaign is about teaching children about their rights, drugs and different kinds of abuse.

The children marched from the community park next to Emthunzini in Mamelodi East to Rethabile community hall spreading the message of children’s rights.

“The event wants to teach children about their rights at an early age and where to report crimes,” said Molokomme.

Warrant Officer Michael Ngetu from the Mamelodi West police spoke to the children about their safety.

“Do not accept gifts from strangers and always listen to your parents,” he told them.

Ngetu said many children get lost at shopping malls and he made the children promise to always listen to their parents to avoid getting lost.

He warned against parents leaving their children under the supervision of another child or unsupervised.

Ngetu also spoke about missing children in the community, bullying and the dangers of drugs.

Kate Kekana from Thandanani Drop inn centre told parents and children about the afternoon school care programme and school holidays programme at the centre.

The afternoon programme takes care of community children with schoolwork and feeds them while waiting for parents to come back from work.

“The school holiday programme is the same as the afternoon programme but this time we have more children and we take care of the children the whole day,” said Kekana.

The children are fed in the morning with breakfast and get a full meal for lunch.

The programme keeps the children busy, safe and off the streets.
