Woman killed and many left critical after taxi and van crash

At the time of the accident, a baby was found on the scene and no parent or guardian came forward to claim the baby.

A woman died and several people were critically injured after a multiple-vehicle collision involving a van and a taxi on WF Nkomo Street (previously Church Street) in Hatfield on Sunday evening, May 29.

The Ambu-Link Emergency Medical Service responded to reports of the accident around 19:00, said spokesperson Xander Loubser.

Loubser said soon after the taxi and van collided, a third vehicle hit the taxi from behind.

He said the multi-vehicle crash left many people critically injured with some sustaining moderate injuries.

“A woman, unfortunately, died on the scene.

At the time of the accident, a baby was found on the scene and no parent or guardian came forward to claim the baby.

Loubser said the baby was taken by an advanced life support paramedic and TMPD officials to social services.

“It was later found that the child’s mother was in critical condition and transported to a hospital.

“The grandmother, however, availed herself to claim the baby,” he said.

Loubser said that paramedics treated and transported people to various hospitals with several ambulances.
